Tyros, the peaceful fishing village in Arkadia with the wonderful beach
I have visited Tyros many times in the past and now it was for a road trip to Northern and Southern Kynouria provinces, meaning all coastal Arkadia, with stops at Xiropigado, Astros, Tyros and Leonidio.
Southern Kynouria is an isolated part of the Peloponnese where the steep slopes of Mount Parnonas fall into the sea forming beautiful coves and beaches.
Tyros is a peaceful village in Tsakonia with the Tsakonian name being Teres. It comes from the ancient deity Tyritas which was associated with Apollo, somewhere there is a sign for the sanctuary of Apollo Tyritas.
The road was opened in the late 60s and until then communication with the rest of the world was done by fishing boats. Life is peaceful for the locals with tourism, fishing, agriculture and animal husbandry being their main occupations. There are also many immigrants to the USA and Canada who return regularly however because they love their birthplace.
Tyros is a coastal street all and all. It offers swimming, relaxation, walking and nice food, especially fresh fish from the fishing boats, that's why I return again and again.
If you don't like quietness, make just a stop in Tyros or stay at most one day, but if you are looking for some rest then this is the place to be. The visitors it attracts are mainly families and the elderly.
Tyros beach
The beach is excellent with pebbles and nice colours as you can see in the photos although the road has significantly reduced its width. It also has showers.
The hotels I recommend in Tyros are:
- (€€) Tyros Boutique Houses Villas (⭐ 9,7) comfort and a decent choice to stay also ideal for families
- (€) Paraskevas Boutique Hotel (⭐ 8,8) a renovated hotel in a privileged place in front of the beach
- (€) Manto Studios (⭐ 9,6) studios in Zaritsi beach

Where to eat
- I chose Remezzo because its slogan "local cuisine with a twist" caught my interest and I didn't regret it. The dishes are prepared with local ingredients in somewhat different versions. I unreservedly recommend stew of tsakonian veal, slow-cooked in clay with tsakonian eggplants, peloponnesian salad and dako of Tyros. The menu is rich and there is no chance that it will not satisfy your taste
Other taverns you will find:
- Acapulco on a deck - balcony on the beach for grilled meats, stews and seafood
- Akrogiali fish tavern with tables on the beach for fresh fish, meat, stews
- Kamvissis with sea view for stews and meats
- Apaggio with tables on the beach for grilled meats, pasta, pizzas, seafood
- Flisvos serves dishes of the day. On the day I visited it had stuffed eggplant, baked eggplant, chicken with pork ribs, fresh grouper
For souvlaki at Marneris and Menis steakhouses and for pizza at Jimmy's pizzeria.
The coastal street is closed from 21:00 to midnight.
What else to do
I am sitting for coffee and snacks at the Limani cafe overlooking the harbour with the fishing boats. Other options are Diachroniko which offers four types of breakfast and Tsakonia with a variety of cold cuts. For the night, I don't need to say it, you will go for a drink in Karnagio.
Two things I recommend doing are hiking to the barites mines on the north side of the cove to see the pillar as it is in the sea and the tunnels. In addition this route has a very nice view of the sea. You can also go to the nearby Tigani beach for a swim, where you can rent canoes and pedal boats. It is organized with sunbeds and two small beach bars.
How to get there
I have written an article with all the details on how to get to Xiropigado, Astros, Tyros, Leonidio.
Nearby destinations
It is worth visiting Astros, Leonidio with the beach Plaka and Poulithra. 45 minutes south of Leonidio is the remote Fokiano beach.
