The Acropolis museum

The Acropolis Museum is a must visit because it doesn't just house the archaeological exhibits of the Acropolis but rather highlights them in the way they deserve.

It is a jewel-building that marries ancient history with the modern world. The modern infrastructure makes you feel like you are in ancient Greece.

The entrance of the Museum is located on the pedestrian street of Dionysiou Areopagitou right next to the "Acropolis" Metro station. It stands out because it is the only modern building among older ones. The first impression is the ancient city that can be seen on the floor and continues inside under transparent glass. Inside it is large in size and impressive. The corridors are spacious while in the halls you can walk comfortably without being overcrowded. The columns look like being ancient ones while the olives pots are a nice touch.

At the entrance, for security reasons, the belongings of the public are scanned. Right away you see models of how the Acropolis rock was in different periods of history, from the archaic Ekatompedon to a Christian temple.

The exhibits are very well placed with very good preservation even in those with missing members. The most impressive exhibits are the Caryatids which have differences between them, in clothes, headdress and in the posture of the body. The exhibits include what is most familiar to the Greeks from textbooks. Statues, sculptures, facades, pediments, pots that are familiar to us from our childhood. Each one is also a mythical scene or a scene from the daily life of the ancients all important pillars of ancient history.

You go up to the floors with an elevator or escalators. There are screens that play educational videos about the history of the Acropolis and how the exhibits were craned into the museum. There is even a large screen with seats like a cinema. The lighting is modern and in some exhibits there is also hidden lighting. The edges of the floors have plexiglass protectors.

The guided tours of the groups take place with individual headphones. This is necessary because there are many tour guides and people so that the voices do not mix. The guided tours are more like an individual historical narrative. Usually in each exhibit they also tell the corresponding myth, such as the birth of Athena, Helen of Troy, the myths related to the twelve gods and the ceremonies in honor of the gods. All the exhibits have their own story.

The top floor is aligned with the Acropolis, it has huge windows with a panoramic view of the Holy Rock, Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian street, the historical hills and the modern cityscape of Athens. The windows are covered with blinds for protection from the sun but the light diffuses very nicely inside the floor.

Take care to visit the Museum first and then the Acropolis so that on the Holy Rock you understand what you are seeing because if you do the opposite you will see the stones without understanding what they are.

The Museum is a very good activity for children too. Finally there is a souvenir shop, a cafe and a restaurant.
