At the Monastery of Agios Dimitrios Avgo in Argolida
In a large valley of Argolida, where the stream Rados or Bedeni (ancient name Sellas) flows, the monastery of Agios Dimitrios Avgo (Egg) is located among the rocks like an eagle's nest. It is not visible from anywhere except through the valley.
Its history is unknown because its record was lost during the Revolution of 1821. It is believed to have been founded in the 11th century on the site of a hermitage. According to the legend about its foundation an egg was thrown on the cliffs which after the miraculous intervention of Saint Demetrius remained intact. It was closed down after the Revolution like many other monasteries.
Today the monastery has been renovated. First you come across the guest house building and then a wall where the entrance gate is. Its beauty is admittedly eerie. Inside it is quite claustrophobic. There is a small church which now has stalactites and has become one with the rock. Above there is another small church of the Transfiguration of the Savior. The dome at the top of the monastery is impressive.
The access is by road on a passable dirt road from the deserted village Pelei near Trachia. The distance from the main road is 7 kilometers, there is a sign. Before you arrive you see a large plateau which seems to have been cultivated since ancient times. Just before you reach the monastery park your vehicle to follow the trail on foot.
The landscape is really wild but the view of the valley to Iria and the Argolic gulf is magnificent. It is easy to understand that the monastery was built many centuries ago. Worth it for photos and to admire the scenery.
Rados stream
In winter and spring, if it has rained enough, Rados stream rushes down into the valley. When I went there was so much water flowing that the sound of the waterfall could be heard coming through the vegetation of the valley. I reached the valley easily with no problems by car. The waterfall sounded very loud but the sound together with the beauty of the landscape calmed me down. A lake forms where the waterfall flows.
