A stroll in the Ellinikon Experience Park
The Exhibition Center
I visited Ellinikon Experience Park with my children, a boy and a girl aged 6 and 8 respectively. Not only they had a good time but also us the adults and I will describe everything in every detail below.
The former airport of Ellinikon will be transformed in the coming years into the largest Metropolitan Park in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The Experience Park has therefore been created where the former American military base was once located, a park consisting of the Exhibition Center, the Water Maze, a wooden playground and gardens for walking and exercise.
The Exhibition Center is located inside a renovated airplane hangar and was created to see with the help of virtual technology what the Metropolitan Park will look like when it will be completed in 2050 and how it will change the face of the Athenian Riviera. The visit is free and you need to book online to choose a time to visit, times are every half hour. The tour is guided.
The mockup of the park
First point is the mockup of the park as it will be when it is fully completed. In the center is the park with the lakes, around the buildings, while next to the sea is the beach, the marina and the famous Riviera Tower. An audio-visual spectacle will unfold before you there!
Virtual tour of the park by bike
A virtual bike tour of the park's nature and lakes follows (biking is for adults only). In other points is presented every detail of the park: the technology, the environment, the microclimate, a comparison is made with other metropolitan parks of the world, the night sky.
The flora of the park in an application for children
The boat that will take you on a virtual tour of the park's shores as they will be when completed in 2050
By far the most impressive sight is the virtual boat tour along the beach where you will take a leisurely boat ride to get a photorealistic view of the park from this point of view as well. The boat shakes like it has an engine and you will see the impressive graphics, the colours of the sunset and the park at night where the Riviera Tower can be seen lit up. The whole tour takes about 25 minutes.
After you exit the Exhibition Center there are gardens with low vegetation for walking and physical exercise.
What follows is for the children. In the labyrinth with the fountains, the Water Maze, children will be happy to run and get wet together. In the evenings it gets particularly impressive with the colourful lighting. There is also a canteen to get your refreshments and concrete benches to sit on, some with shade. Right next to it, is the wooden playground with many toys, the cable car with designs like an airport runway and the wooden plane stands out.
There is a parking lot with many parking spots. The entrance to the park is located on Vouliagmenis Avenue in the reservoir very close to the Elliniko Metro station. You can also visit it at night as the lighting is very good.
